Before you try to replicate something you saw on TV, make sure you have the proper training – or you may fall prey to the dreaded MMA Pettis Kick Fail.
Anthony “Showtime” Pettis is a professional athlete. He has been training MMA, BJJ, and other martial arts most of his existence. Anthony Pettis is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, a 3rd Dan in TKD, and a yellow rope in Capoeira. He is also only 155 pounds, limber, lighting fast, super flexible and is athletically sound. Those abilities and skills combined with his years of training and experience in the cage, give him the ability to pull of athletic feats in his MMA fights.
Larger MMA fighters, BJJ grapplers, or wrestlers do not have the same skills as their lighter peers. This is not to say they are less athletic or lesser fighters, only structured differently to provide different strengths and different skills. And as you can see here, the same goes for lighter athletes, as they typically do not have the same skill set as their heavier peers.
We all have certain skills and characteristics that fit our body type and fighting style, which is why proper instruction, coaching, and a training regimen are essential for success.
Sometimes a Hail Mary can save our skin, but it’s called a “Hail Mary” for a reason.
